MLK Roadway and Sidewalk Rehabilitation
MCS supplied two different grid deck systems for the same Ohio structure: a half-filled roadway deck and a fully filled sidewalk deck. The sidewalk scope was larger than the roadway scope, and MCS also provided field-installed materials including three custom beveled shim-plate configurations.

The Challenge
Beyond manufacturing the roadway and sidewalk panels, MCS was responsible for several field-installed components. The most difficult items were three styles of beveled shim plates that MCS does not typically produce. The plates started at ⅜ inch thick and had to be beveled to 5⁄16 inch. Finding a supplier with the right capability and schedule proved difficult and created a risk to field delivery.

The MCS Approach
MCS coordinated production of both grid systems and the associated field materials as one comprehensive package. When an outside source for the beveled shim plates could not be secured in time, MCS’s Alum Bank operation completed the beveling in-house. Although the plates required additional processing time, they arrived at the jobsite when needed and did not interfere with fabrication of the main deck panels.

The Outcome
The sidewalk portion was completed on budget, while the roadway portion finished slightly over budget. The two deliveries occurred approximately three and four days after their respective target dates. About one year after installation, no performance issues had been reported. Customer survey feedback rated MCS 'Outstanding' in customer service, product quality, communication, and on-time delivery, with the majority of evaluated categories receiving the highest rating.
