Published grid deck material notes and industry presentations document decades of service history, including grid decks placed in the 1930s that remain in service. BGFMA materials also position galvanized steel grid systems as part of the 100-year bridge service-life conversation.
The CIP figure uses an 8-inch normal-weight concrete deck assumption. The grid range reflects published open grid, half-filled grid, and Exodermic deck weight ranges.
FHWA work-zone statistics count at least two work-zone deaths on US roads every day, with most victims drivers and passengers: 956 work-zone deaths in 2021, one fatality for every $112 million of roadway construction spending, and rear-end collisions behind nearly one-quarter of fatal work-zone crashes in 2024. Every additional day of field work above live traffic raises the chance a project contributes to that total. Prefabricated bridge elements move more work away from active traffic and reduce the number of field operations performed on the bridge.
The homepage comparison uses published staged-replacement examples as a planning signal, not a guaranteed closure schedule. Actual closure windows depend on phasing, access, traffic control, and owner requirements.
CIP deck work typically requires forming, placement, finishing, and curing in sequence. Bridge Grid panels are fabricated before delivery and set in the field.
Several steel grid deck systems are designed to act as permanent forms, reducing temporary forming, shoring, and stripping work in the field.
MCS project records for a half-filled grid replacement showed field labor hours at roughly half of the comparable cast-in-place approach. This is a project record, not a universal guarantee.
